ALEX MOSELEY on The Issues |
|
There are three main issues that must be addressed in this election. The first issue is that of illegal immigration. Although some argue that illegal immigration is a problem for the federal government, there is much that can be done by the state of Tennessee to deter the flow of illegal immigrants to our state. As other states tighten their laws regarding those who are not legally in the United States, Tennessee is becoming a haven. Illegal immigration depresses wages and drains precious funds from hospitals, education systems, and the social safety net. I will work with other lawmakers to “demagnetize” our state and cause illegal immigrants to self-deport. The second issue is that of creating economic growth. Tennessee has missed several opportunities to attract major employers in the last decade. This is due to our high business taxes which are currently among the highest in the region. Taxes must be lowered to make our state more attractive to business interests and barriers to small business growth must be lowered to encourage growth from within. High tech employers are also interested in a better educated workforce. Our area is leading the way in education in Tennessee. This is due to the emphasis our parents, teachers, and administrators have placed on education and an economic commitment to funding education that is unmatched in the state. Unfortunately, money alone cannot fix a broken education system and the time has come to stop rewarding failing educational systems with massive increases in funding from our tax dollars. Students who wish to attend successful systems outside their district should be allowed to do so at the successful systems’ discretion and state funding for that student should be diverted from his or her home district to the district they will be attending. School systems should also receive bonus funding based upon performance. This type of funding will encourage competition and improvement. The same party has controlled the state House of Representatives for more than 140 years. They have been responsible for every tax increase and restriction on our personal freedoms over that time. If they haven’t done anything to address these problems yet, they aren’t likely to in the near future. I WILL WORK TO FIX THESE ISSUES IMMEDIATELY. |
